PS3 kills Blu-ray

The PS3 has been the conveyor of multi-media for some time, being the best valued Blu-Ray play on the market certainly helps it's goal, yet some consumers are finding that the PS3 is killing Blu-Ray.

No, not the brand, but early reports have it that the PS3 is slowly degrading Blu-Ray discs. Reports have it that 43% of all PS3's have an improperly manufactured a Blu-Ray diode that emits lasers at a 15% higher frequency than normal diodes. The immediate effects are not noticeable but after time, the higher frequency lasers degrade the disks and cause major effects in quality.

Our test product in the labs showed an noticeable decrease in video quality after one years worth of watching the disks. Our researchers have noticed a nearly 50% decrease in video quality compared to a newly bought version.

Now, Insider sources are telling us that nearly 43% of PS3 have the same error in manufacturing. Sony is aware of the problem and is trying to fix it undercover but has not publicly admitted the problem because of the huge repair costs. Not much is know about the topic more than what I have revealed to you. We will continue reporting on the subject as information comes into our hands.

iPhone - Your next wallet?

From TUAW:

This is pretty much genius. Like Albert, I have a bunch of "membership cards" in my wallet -- they're those cards with a barcode or number on them that you get from places like the local grocery store, or some other retailer. They're useful to have around, but they tend to pile up after a while, and pretty soon, your wallet gets to be a brick of barcodes rather than anything you'd actually want to carry around in your pocket. Albert's solution was to scan all of his barcodes into the iPhone, front and back, as an iPhoto album. And lo and behold, just like the paperless boarding passes we posted about a while back, it worked. All of the barcodes were scannable, which means no more countless membership cards -- just a gallery in your iPhone.

We've already heard of barcodes reading both on and off of the iPhone, of course, and we'll hopefully see more of this when the SDK drops in just about a month here (maybe, in the future, someone will write an app to generate barcodes from numbers, so you don't even need to get a clear scan). But even without an external app, this is pretty handy solution to clearing up some of the clutter in your wallet. Obviously, for anything important (driver's license, credit cards), an iPhone scan won't do. But just to get the membership prices down at the Jewel-Osco, scanning wallet cards into an iPhone seems to work just fine. Very nice.

Reliable Source - 3G iPhone Release

GeekSugar has said that a reliable inside source has said that on June 9th, 2008, the new 3G iPhone will be released.  This is in line with most evidence, though the recent disappearance of iPhone stock drove speculation that the 3G iPhone announcement could come even sooner.

On another note:
As rumored, Swisscom announced today that they would be delivering the iPhone to Switzerland later this year:

The iPhone will be available later this year. We will inform you personally as soon as we have more news.

As typical for these announcements, no details are provided.

HBO and iTunes, love at first sight?

HBO and Apple today announced that programming from HBO is now available for purchase and download on the iTunes Store (www.itunes.com). New HBO programs on iTunes include the Emmy Award-winning programs "The Sopranos," "Sex and the City," "Deadwood" and "Rome," as well as the critically acclaimed hits "Flight of the Conchords" and "The Wire."

iPhone in Africa, Mmmm Safari...

In the past few months, many countries have gotten to use the iPhone. Most notably, Vodafone's agreement to bring the iPhone to ten countries, but this begs the question, Who's next?

Vodafone is a broadcaster in Africa aswell, so the iPhone in Africa may bring a comical meaning to the term "Safari." But apple has missed the point. Instead of focusing on which countries will actually buy the phone, they are trying to expand their reach farther into the world. This is a grave mistake.

40% of Apple's revenue comes from North America, yet the iPhone is only for sale in the US. Canada and Mexico are yet to legally see the iPhone. But this could all be part of Apple's plan for world domination, So only time will tell...

WWDC Keynote

Apple officially announced today that "a team of Apple executives, led by CEO Steve Jobs" would kick off Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 9th.

This year's WWDC will be showcasing both Mac OS X and OS X iPhone:
The five-day WWDC event, which runs from June 9 to June 13, will feature the first ever iPhone track for mobile developers with in-depth sessions and hands-on labs to fully explore the capabilities of the OS X iPhone 2.0 software, including the iPhone SDK and the App Store, a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to iPhone and iPod touch users.

Apple is widely expected to introduce a 3G-capable iPhone at this year's WWDC.

3G iPhone to include GPS/Front-Camera?

LeMatin.ch (French) reports that based on a source in Swisscom, Switzerland will be getting the iPhone this summer.

By itself, this news is not that surprising, as there have been a growing number of reports of the iPhone being delivered internationally in the coming months. Unique to this source, however, is the report that the iPhone would come with GPS, Video Conferencing and Mobile TV functionality.

GPS and video conferencing (with front-sided camera) have both been rumored for the next generation iPhone, but the addition of mobile television is new.

Successor to the iPhone throne. The Apple PDA

A far fetched idea, you may say, but it may be true. Apple's job offers hint at it, and it just seems reasonable to conclude that this is true. After all, Apple Employees have said that the 3G iPhone will come out soon, within the next week. It will probably have a 720x480 display, about 1.5x times the size of the iPhone, with a screen that takes up the whole surface. It will mark the return of the Apple's Newton, a 1993 Project failure.

Maybe Apple will have a shot at it now. More details to follow.

3G iPhone - May?

Switchtoamac.com has said earlier that the 3G iPhone will be released in May, this month. At first, this may seem like a preposterous idea, but it may be true.

From MacRumors:

"As mentioned, SwitchToaMac's source claimed that the 3G-capable iPhone would be announced in May, with the belief that it would be available for purchase the day after the announcement.

The reason for a pre-WWDC announcement? Reportedly, Apple would instead announce a brand new portable device at WWDC. No other details of what this device might be, but there have been rumors that Apple was developing a mini-tablet multitouch device for launch in 2008. This PDA-like device would reportedly have a higher screen resolution (720x480) and be about 1.5x the size of the existing iPhone.

Repubblica.it first reported (in April) that they expected the Italian 3G iPhone launch "in the next few weeks", suggesting a May launch. While Telecom Italia and Vodofone did announce their intentions to supply the iPhone in Italy, no formal announcement had been made from Apple. Meanwhile, Apple's supply of iPhones has dwindled to nothing and our retail sources have indicated that they too will not be receiving many (if any) more iPhone shipments, leading many to speculate that the 3G-capable iPhone launch will be sooner than expected.

We don't necessarily believe this rumor is true, but present it as an interesting possibility. Obviously, we'll see between now and WWDC if it has any merit."

3G ON/OFF Switch Found On Latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware

A new preference was found in the latest iPhone 2.0 Beta 5 distributed to developers. The default preference was hidden but Chronic Productions claims to have activated it. Since that time, we have received confirmation that the text shown is indeed in the iPhone 2.0 Beta firmware, in this case, the screenshot appears to be legitimate. The iPhone 2.0 firmware appears to contain 3G code, but current iPhone owners will not be able to take advantage of the 3G speeds without buying the new iPhone because the older model does not contain a 3G capable Antenna. Thanks to this Information, It is apparent that Apple will be using a common firmware for both the existing iPhone and the unreleased 3G-capable iPhone.

Apple also seems to be giving users an option to fall back to EDGE speeds in order to prolong battery life, due to the higher 3G power consumption.

The 3G-capable iPhone is widely expected to be released in the coming months, possibly at the Worldwide Developer Conference in June.

iPhone - UK

iPhone has lived it's last days in the United Kingdom. No longer will the 1st Generation iPhone be seen in the areas of England, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales. It is a sad moment for us all. Although this could mean the new 3G iPhone will come out very, very soon.

Looks like O2, the former carrier for both the 8 and 16GB iPhones, had already run out of 8GB a few weeks ago, but it looks like the 16 has gone too.

Meanwhile, down under (For us Canadians, that means You. Americans. 53.27% of our visitors), the 8GB iPhones are low in stock, also predicting the 3G iPhone.

Microsoft - Yahoo! Deal Part 3: Yahoo! Dies (Kind of)

Well the ambiguous Microsoft - Yahoo! Merger has been cancelled. After Microsoft gave Yahoo! an ultimatum. They said Yahoo had better come to the table by Saturday, April 26rd or get ready for a proxy fight. Well, the date has come and passed.

One week late Microsoft announced that they are resigning their takeover bid on Yahoo!. On that very weekend, Yahoo's stock dropped nearly thirty percent! Proving that Microsoft was Yahoo!'s only hope of making money. know that day to day stocks do not matter, but for a large corporation like Yahoo! to fall 30% in one day is amazingly horrible. And thus ends the soap opera that nobody watched. Alas, poor Yahoo!. I knew thee.

iPhone 2.0 (5a258f) Screenshots

All of these screnies are in different languages I cannot imagine to pronounce, I apologize for the lack of English language.

Wow.

Voda-Fasta!

Vodafone is launching the... guess what... iPhone. In nine countries, Vodafone will bring the marvel of the century. So, the lucky countries are Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Seems like an odd group to go for, but a huge market nonetheless. Users in some of these countries will have the choice to buy the iPhone unlocked for use on any carrier of their choice, so brace for the arrival of the iPhone.

As for the dates, still not confirmed, though expected by the end of this year. Further speculation places the dates at the WWDC, or June 9-13th, 2008.

iPhone va aller au Latin America... (/Bad French)

Well, here it is. The iPhone will be coming to Latin America, on the carrier America Movil. A grand total of sixteen, that's 16 latin american countries will have access to the almighty jesusPhone. The announcement, similar to Rogers' one about Canada, states that it will be coming "later this year". A vague statement, but a conclusive one nonetheless. And since I do not know a word of Spanish, now back to my French lessons...

3G iPhone - More Information.

There are several hints and points regarding the upcoming release of the 3G iPhone, which will be listed below. I would also take this time to apologize to all users out there for our difference in time between the last post and this. Please digg and/or comment this article, it really brings up our spirits, as we readily admit that this is a small website with very limited resources.

1. Screenshots.

2. Employee Vacations.
This may sound like something out-of-the-blue, but the Employee vacation time tells us a lot about upcoming releases. Apple has limited vacation time from June 15-July 15, hinting the release of the 3G iPhone (suspected to be on June 10th). Some people, though, claim that Apple will release it on the one-month anniversary of the iPhone release, or June 27th. The WWDC, another possiblity, is on June 9-13th

3. 2.0 Firmware.
Most people forget about the firmware/software aspect of this, which is the release of the iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit), and the 2.0 Firmware (Leaked at The Pirate Bay) Now, more information will be coming shortly, but check our sidebar for our "2.0 Screenshots" post, which gives an enlightening look at the 2.0 Beta Firmware.
